Tenuta Montiani

Located in San Polo in Chianti, in the province of Florence, Tenuta Montiani is the creator of a production aimed at enhancing the qualities of typical Chianti grapes, with Sangiovese always playing a leading role. It is a strictly family-run business, led by Marinella Vallauri and Michele Gherardo Totaro, together with David Picci and Matteo Vallauri. The winemaking and ageing facilities are housed in the old farm machinery sheds, with the natural protection of the stone enabling optimal temperature and humidity values to be maintained all year round. In addition to winemaking, the farm produces oil and honey and raises farmyard animals, pigs and donkeys.

Tenuta Montiani comprises a total of 25 hectares, of which almost 5 are dedicated to vineyards, 2 to olive groves and the remainder to vegetable gardens, orchards, officinal plants and pastureland, in a context of flourishing biodiversity. The undisputed protagonist of the vineyard park is Sangiovese, the emblem of Chianti enoque, flanked by the other indigenous grapes Mammolo and Canaiolo and the international grape Merlot. The vines, which can be up to 50 years old, are grown under a certified organic system on characteristic soils with a prevalence of marl, at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level. The rows then benefit from the Mediterranean climate, protected by woods and caressed by sea breezes blowing in from the coast. After manual harvesting, always accompanied by careful selection of the grapes, the bunches of grapes are destemmed and then steeped by gravity in stainless steel fermentation vats, where only indigenous yeasts begin the spontaneous transformation of the must into wine, without the aid of any additives or oenological aids. Once the fermentation process is complete, the wine is finally placed to age in large wooden barrels for a period ranging from 10 to 20 months.

The jewel in the crown of Tenuta Montiani's small production is 'Felix', a typically Tuscan red that is characterised by its Mediterranean fragrances and its juicy, flavoursome taste, with a typically Chianti spirit.
