Maugeri
The Maugeri winery is located on the slopes of Mount Etna, one of Italy's premier wine-growing regions, a place the Maugeri family is dedicated to enhancing. The modern history of the estate began recently with Renato Maugeri, who, along with his daughters Carla, Michela, and Paola, decided to restore the family's old abandoned vineyards in the Milo area, on the eastern slope of Etna, an area traditionally known for producing white wines. In 2020, the family bottled their first vintage, the result of a sustainable approach that allows the Maugeri family to produce a small quantity of high-quality wine.
The 7 hectares of vineyards owned by the Maugeri winery are spread across 83 terraces between Contrada Praino and Contrada Volpare, in the Milo area, at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level. The terraces are supported by dry stone walls made of lava rock, as per Etna tradition, forming an amphitheater with fertile volcanic soils. The region’s microclimate is also crucial, marked by significant daily temperature fluctuations in summer and the constant presence of sea breezes that keep the grapes dry. The varieties grown are local, namely Carricante, Nerello Mascalese, and Catarratto, trained using the traditional "alberello" method, following the principles of organic agriculture. The harvest is strictly done by hand, and the winemaking containers include stainless steel vats and French oak tonneaux, with a carefully balanced use of wood.
The family-run Maugeri winery focuses on Etna Bianco Superiore, a specialty of the Milo area, the only municipality on Mount Etna that can use the "Superiore" designation. These wines are made from pure Carricante grapes and are known for their powerful mineral imprint and extraordinary aging potential. Additionally, the quality of their Catarratto is remarkable, highlighting the distinct character of the grape variety.
