The Lagrein from Cantina di Caldaro is a classic Alto Adige red wine that is typically territorial. It is produced with one of the most widespread indigenous dark-skinned grape varieties in the region, born from a spontaneous cross between Teroldego and a variety that is now unknown. Its slightly rough profile and somewhat rustic character make it particularly suitable for pairing with game main courses, typical of the local cuisine. On the nose, it expresses mainly aromas of ripe plum and red fruit, with toasted and slightly spicy notes. On the palate, it has good richness and aromatic persistence, with a tannic structure that is still lively and a balanced freshness.
The red Lagrein from Cantina di Caldaro is produced with grapes from vineyards cultivated in hilly areas with a south to east exposure, located at an altitude between 230 and 350 meters above sea level. The ability to choose from the numerous plots of the vast heritage of vineyards managed by the Cantina in the Lake Caldaro area allows for the creation of harmonious and balanced wines each year. The cool climate and the clay-limestone soils of medium texture have proven to be very suitable for red-skinned varieties. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with a skin maceration period of about ten days. The wine matures for 5 months partly in steel tanks and partly in wood, that is, in large oak barrels and, for 15%, in barriques. After bottling, it rests in the cellar for a few months before being put on sale.
