Gerbais Pierre
The house of Pierre Gerbais is a family reality dedicated for 4 generations to viticulture in Champagne. It was founded in 1930 by André Gerbais in the Côte des Bars, particularly in the vallée de l’Ource, which is the southernmost point of all Champagne. Today it is led with great passion and expertise by Pascal and his son Aurélien, advised by grandfather Pierre and great-grandfather Ulysse, a true pioneer of champagne and historical conscience of the territory. Ulysse was a central and charismatic figure, committed to passing on his experience to younger generations. His motto is: “if you do not drink champagne, you will never be a man!”.
Since 1996, the Pierre Gerbais house has been engaged in a project of sustainable viticulture, believing that great wines can only come from good grapes. For this reason, intervention during the winemaking process is kept to a minimum and the use of sulfites is reduced to a minimum. This production approach was inaugurated by Pascal Gerbais, with the intention of maximizing the value of the family-owned vineyard heritage of 14 hectares, populated with vines over 30 years old, and all the peculiarities of the terroir. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Blanc Vrai (a particular clone of Pinot Bianco) are cultivated here on a clay and limestone soil that, given its geographical position, has many affinities with the terroir of Burgundy, particularly with that of nearby Chablis.
The champagnes of Pierre Gerbais are able to express the full richness of the fruit and the freshness of the territory. They are precise and expressive champagnes, with a broad and citrusy profile, clear and vertical: great expressions of the Côte des Bars.
