San Donatino

San Donatino is first and foremost a story of family, land and vision, born in the heart of Chianti Classico. In 1971, the renowned French poet and singer-songwriter Léo Ferré, together with his wife Maria Cristina Diaz, purchased this estate in the hills of Castellina in Chianti, choosing to make it not just a place, but a life project. Right from the start, the Ferré family dedicated themselves to restoring the vineyards and olive groves. Today, San Donatino remains first and foremost a family business, where every decision is the result of experience, sensitivity and a deep connection with the land, enriched by a unique cultural aura left as a legacy by Léo Ferré.

San Donatino cultivates only organic vineyards, certified since 2012. The winery works with minimal intervention in the vineyard, in line with the artisanal style it has followed since the 1990s, when San Donatino pioneered Orange Wine with 'Diaccio'. The winery, run for years by the legendary Giulio Gambelli and now by Giovanni Stella, works according to a traditional and rigorous approach, with spontaneous fermentation, long maceration and months of ageing on fine lees. The base wines are aged in steel, while the selections and crus rest in wood, always with the aim of avoiding any form of standardisation and respecting the characteristics of each vintage.

In the glass, San Donatino wines express Chianti with a sincere, rustic yet refined voice. The profile is that of vibrant reds, with lively yet harmonious tannins, supported by a natural freshness that comes from the altitude and balance of the vineyards. These are wines that do not seek shortcuts, but only a direct and distinctive taste, to reflect the image of a territory that is home to the Ferré family.
